Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
